Cullen’s Advent Post 2024
A thanks that needs its own page?
A bit excessive, but kinda makes up for a year of not posting on my own socials. I’ll start out covering the Yellowbelly aspect of things, including an album release, and then get into a sort-of personal blog bit towards the end.
System Lincs
First of all, I’m happy to announce the release of my first album on Yellowbelly Records; System Lincs! This is a very odd release though, unlike any other we’ve ever done, and it’ll soon become clear why.
Back in 2020 when the Big Sniff stuffed everyone into their rooms, I decided to use that time learning something I’d been wanting to try for a long time; retro console programming. Indeed, I’m not some qualified music producer, my degree is in Games Programming of all things. So, with literally nothing else on, I got stuck into assembly on the NES. However, I quickly got distracted by programming the sound chip alone, which led me to trying to emulate some Wildflowers songs on the limited hardware. Soon after, other songs followed, mostly from artists I was performing alongside at the time. Now, near 4 years on, I’m finally releasing this collection of songs to you all, free to download and play!
Play being in the literal sense. Being programmed on the NES, you’re gonna have to run the album in an NES emulator. I’ll probably export some recordings if there’s interest for them, and I can’t go selling this one on CD or anything as it’d be a nightmare to retroactively get all the permissions from all of the artists. But if you’re interested in hearing some chiptune renditions of mostly Lincoln-based music from around 2018-2020, by all means give it a play, I’d love to hear your thoughts on the album! I absolutely recommend following along in the Interactive Booklet on the page for the full experience.
Yellowbelly Records
Now then, this has been a heck of a year for YBR. We saw exponential growth last year, and we knew from the start that a repeat wouldn’t be sustainable this year. That said, we still went and did a lot. In our first year we released 7 albums total; our second had 12. This year we released 18 (19 including System Lincs); 10 in the first few months.
I’m super happy with the releases we put out, and I think every record has been brilliant. My favourite part of working in this label has been collaborating with artists to bring their music out in a lovingly crafted package, from beginning to end. Similarly, it has been an amazing change of pace working with artists that already have their artwork complete. These albums are still very much complete and crafted, but it has been nice not having to be involved in every single step of development; more on this later. We’ve also taken on some new challenges; some that worked, and some that didn’t. We’ve certainly found our limits in some areas, but continue to innovate in others.
We’re certainly in the position now where we have a lot of albums both in the works, and we’re working with artists that would like to work with us in the near future. That’s not to sound braggy, it’s just a big difference to early on where we were approaching loads of artists to try and get some releases in the works. However, we’ve certainly had to slow down and stop the ‘yes man’ attitude to every opportunity. This sucks, but that kind of work has led to burnout across the board for us; we’re still mainly a 2-man team after all!
This is why the latter half of the year has been quieter for us, behind the scenes at least. The latter half of this year has featured a lot of ‘complete’ releases, which is how we describe albums that people bring to us that are already mixed, mastered and have the artwork all complete. We’ll add some touches, like copyright notes, minor design fixes and mastering for CD, but they didn’t require nearly as much work as others. This isn’t to say they are superior in any way; I absolutely adore our Yellowbelly Recorded series, where we are involved in every step from recording right up to launching them. But with the burnout we got into by the summer, it has certainly been a necessary break for us.
This leads us to the future. Next year, we already have a handful of albums ready for release, and a handful more that are planned to release later in the year. We have a number of firsts too; the first Yellowbelly Recorded album mixed by someone that isn’t me, our first triple album, and the first release in another series of releases I’m really looking forward to.
We’re also looking at expanding our video output as our tests this year have gone down very well; let us know what you’d like to see on our socials or our email! Similarly, if you have experience in mixing, mastering, show booking, graphics or video, get in touch and we’ll chat about how we could work together!
For now, I’d like to thank all of the amazing artists we’ve worked with this year, in previous years, and in the year to come. You’ve all been exceptionally friendly, patient and collaborative, and I have enjoyed every single one of the releases we’ve put out together. I’d like to thank all the people who have helped make Yellowbelly Records what it is today; Mary, Josh, Tommy and Joe for your help on and off stage, Mick and Carol at Magnumpix Photography for always being a solid presence, Dale and Ed at Not That Kind Of CIC for their tireless events and business support, Tony and Jan at the Crafty Cove for being absolute printing legends, all the venues that have been extraordinary, my family for their amazing patience and support, and all you guys for helping us to support all these amazing local artists!
Yellowbelly Recorded & Yellowbelly Archives
Another surprise announcement, who’d’ve thunk it! This is kind of a prelude announcement, the proper one will come out in due time, but I’d like to mention these ‘series’ that we’ve got underway.
Yellowbelly Recorded has always been one of my main objectives with YBR, making recording and physical releases accessible to any artist regardless of size, scope and budget. I’m really happy with how far it’s come along; from a janky 4-channel setup for the first 3 releases, all the way to the modern ‘MacRack’, which features 16-channels (Update, soon to be 24!) to record full band setups. These records have been monumental for us, and to the artists we’ve worked with; I’ve had some personal testimonials that have certainly justified my belief in this system. This aspect will certainly be leaned into more and more as we grow and develop, making recording accessible is crucial to the YBR mission, and if we can offer that to established and larger acts as well, then we’re just gonna have more fun with it!
Yellowbelly Archives is a working title for a series of releases we’ll be developing in 2025. It’s going to be a collection of releases that aren’t supporting artists that are necessarily active or looking to make a bunch of sales, but rather it’s designed for anyone that would like to have their music archived and available to backup.
This was inspired in two parts; an artist reached out in the summer with what they believe to be the sole vinyl recording of a band they were in decades ago, and they wanted it backing up lest the music get lost to time. This resonated with me greatly due to my second inspiration; The Wildflowers. We never got an album recorded, and I know we’ll never get to recording it. This year, I’ve spent a lot of time looking into stem splitting technology, which allows me to input a recording from a phone, GoPro or other device, and separate the recording into individual stems, allowing the songs to be better mixed as if recorded properly. Using multiple recordings, splitting them, syncing them and mixing them, I’ve managed to get some half-decent versions of these otherwise lost songs. It is by no means perfect, but it’s 100% better than not having them available at all. No music deserves to be lost. That’s why we’ll be making the Yellowbelly Archives, not for profit or sales, but to ensure music isn’t lost and forgotten.
Jack Kendrick & the Broken Wonders
Early on in YBR, I sessioned for Jack’s first take of his album, then joined him for some live shows alongside Jim. All the while, Jack was thinking on how he would like his backing band, the Broken Wonders, should form. It soon became clear to all of us that the band had fallen into place naturally, and Same Mistakes came to be. Then Jack said; ‘2024 will mostly be solo gigs, but when somewhere wants a band, I’ll get you guys involved.’ Well, that ended up being a tad incorrect.
We ended up playing some massive shows; Ey Up Mi Duck, Dogfest, Gig In A Field, DH Lawrence Festival, and many many more shows across the country. All of these have been absolutely fantastic experiences, and I’m super honoured to be performing alongside these sensational musicians regularly and seeing how we each develop and grow at every show.
Jack’s solo gigs ended up taking the backseat, but all of these shows meant that Jack’s albums and EPs became one of the most reprinted releases we’ve dealt with. It has always been super important to me to maintain a separation between YBR and being in the Broken Wonders, which has not been an issue as printing is the same for all artists and there’s no preferential treatment; to be fair, Jack’d probably have a right go if that were the case!
We’ve been recording the next album at a new studio for us, Shug Studios, which has been a welcome change of pace as we don’t have to do all the work ourselves. I’m really looking forward to all we have in store for this band, and all the songs, releases and gigs that are coming up! Huge thanks to Jack for having me on board this wild ride as your bassist, non-manager and good friend; to Jim for being a wonderful chap, and for somehow working together to create a smashing rhythm section for someone with the internal rhythm of an excitable puppy; to Alan for helping me justify all our crazy ideas together; to Neil at Wroot Rocks for believing in us; and to all the amazing artists and venues we’ve worked alongside.
Robot Wars
Another surprisingly large factor of this year, completely removed from YBR, was my participation in Mech Mania; the spiritual successor to Robot Wars. Yeah, really.
I’ve been hanging around the pits at Robots Live for years, helping out with a few bits and bobs like repairs, soldering and occasional driving. This seems to have helped as I was invited to join a team this year! I was thrilled to join in, getting to work on a bot at multiple events across the country, competing and fighting some legendary competitors; it was exactly what I was hoping for and more. Combine that with this season being recorded for the new televised series, you guys will be able to catch all the action too, which is fantastic. I’ve yet to see the show myself, I don’t think it’ll be live when this post goes up, but I’ll be sure to share it when it does!
Huge thanks to Greg for inviting me onto the team and being so accommodating for this comparative noob, to Zoe and Jacob at Team DNG for being awesome benchmates, and to all the Robots Live crew for being so amazing at what you do.
Everything Else
Now to recap everything else that’s happened this year; because I’m swiftly running out of time and space!
I’m very fortunate to be working with MindJam, a fantastic company that does a lot for the mental wellbeing for young people across the world. I’m extremely thankful to all the MindJam team, the parents and carers I work alongside, and the amazing young people I’ve had the pleasure of getting to know.
Despite leaving the gaming industry, I still develop when I get a spare moment. Combining my passions for game dev and writing, I’ve got a large mod for Morrowind underway that’s mostly written and partially implemented. If you’re into the Elder Scrolls universe too, drop me a line, I love to chat lore!
Despite announcements last year, I’ve still not had time to get my own music recorded, which has been bearing down on me all year. As part of getting more people involved in helping YBR next year, I’m hoping this will leave me a bit more time to get this EP out. People I’ve shown so far seem to like it, so it’s just a matter of getting it done.
A massive help this year has been getting on the road! Finally, I’m driving myself places, much to the relief of many members of the YBR crew! Shoutout to Danny Topliss, my driving instructor. If any of you need to learn to drive in Lincoln, I absolutely recommend getting in touch; great laugh, fantastic instructor, top bloke. Also shoutout to YBR crew member Mary for selling me my first car; proper lovely little runner.
And of course, a major focus of this year has been my family. Looking after a two year old is never going to be easy, and is perhaps one of the major reasons I’ve not had as much time now! But I wouldn’t change him for anything, and myself and his mum couldn’t be more proud of the little man he’s becoming. If some things end up being delayed while I get to look after him, so be it, I wouldn’t have it any other way. I want to thank my wife, parents, in-laws and all my friends who have stood by me through all the crazy things going on, this year and otherwise.
So yeah, merry christmas all of you! If you’ve actually read all of this, thank you so, so much, it means more than you know.
